Students, mostly from the Ernesto Che Guevara Pre-University Vocational Institute of Exact Sciences in the city of Santa Clara, earned four awards and a mention at the Ibero-American Informatics Olympiad (OII) held on June 14 at the University of Informatics Sciences (UCI) in Havana.
Frank Hernández González, instructor at the Provincial Training Center, informed Vanguardia that in this new edition of the annual event, Cuba was the host country of the online competition, with a delegation of 15 students.
He explained that the only gold medal awarded at the national level went to Marco Antonio Escandón García (12th) from Villa Clara, and Maité Morales Carreras (11th) earned silver. Mauricio Cruz Siles (8th) from El Vaquerito Junior High School in Santa Clara, and Manuel Alejandro Plana Méndez (12th) took bronze, while Daniel Alberto Seijo Águila (10th) received a mention.
The Villa Clara students who won the gold and silver medals will be part of the Cuban delegation attending the International Olympiad in Informatics, to be held in Bolivia from July 27 to August 4.
Hernández González emphasized that the Provincial Training Center serves and guides scientific talent in the province, and also contributes to training in basic secondary and pre-university education.
The first edition of the Ibero-American Informatics Olympiad took place in Cuba in 1998, when the largest of the Antilles hosted the competitive event.
