Arriving at the Botanical Garden nestled in areas of the “Marta Abreu” Central University of Las Villas is a true gift for the visitor who breathes purer air there, and admires the relics of nature in a place where the conservation of that environment and the collections of flora and fauna that the city of Santa Clara possesses.
Doctor of Science Idelfonso Castañeda Noa, full professor and Director of the Santa Clara Botanical Garden Studies Center, recalls that this site was created almost 70 years ago, and is dedicated to teaching subjects such as Botany in Agronomy and Biology careers.
In 2003 the recovery of that place began, greatly impacted by the economic contraction of the so-called Special Period. The improvement of collections of living plants has already been achieved and the mission of the Study Center, aimed at training the new generations, has been strengthened.
On the other hand, they undertake and are inserted in other investigations, among them, studies of flora and vegetation, of threatened species and their conservation in situ and ex situ (inside and outside the Garden, in an area of interest to the institution), as well as from another line referred to the Project of the flora of the Republic of Cuba “where we have published more than 6 botanical families with novel results of new species for science, with changes from the taxonomic point of view, updating and geographical distribution in the country , an ambitious project in which we have participated together with foreign researchers”, he clarified.
