The VI Territorial Workshop of Women in Tourism, a space for reflections and commitments.

A representative group of those who dedicate their days to work in the Tourism sector attended La Esquina del Home, in Santa Clara, to hold a different celebration, aimed at listening to what has been done, committing to how much is still missing and expose their dissatisfactions, in the session of the VI Territorial Workshop of Women linked to this branch.

It was not an exclusive event, there also participated men who play a fundamental role in important facilities and companies in the sector, and must ensure the rights of women as established in the National Program for the Advancement of Women, which seeks their empowerment in order to defend their rights, opportunities and possibilities, and say no to any hint of violence and discrimination.

It fell to Mayelín Díaz Rodríguez, general secretary of the FMC in the territory, to offer a broad overview of this platform based on its seven methodological areas, which propose the defense of equality in its transit from the home, the neighborhood, the center labor and in the rest of the actions and scenarios where the female presence is usual.

It is, above all, to avoid what she called the “octopus woman”, burdened with occupations, tasks and parcels, and when she arrives home she must continue working double or triple shifts, in another long schedule, with little or no support.

Tourism in Villa Clara is nurtured by a real workforce of 11,276 workers and there is a balance between women and men in its workforce, since the female component represents 44.6% of the total, as reported by the Deputy Director of Research of the Tourism Training Center, Vivian Martínez de la Vega, who led each step of the workshop in a creative and innovative way.

Something outstanding is the creation, in 2017, of the Haydée Santamaría Chair as a precedent to form the Gender Committee with the same name and also made up of men.

The perspectives are multiple, and among its edges are the improvement in gender tasks, without turning its back on the problems they face in their daily struggle in one of the sectors with mostly young potential.

Training is required in the sector based on the National Program for the Advancement of Women, with emphasis on promoting women to managerial positions, on performing in non-traditional positions, and on the attention required by those who deserve careful treatment. and promote quality services as a crown of excellence in the sector.

An essential detail to safeguard the different stages is the investigation of the role of women in the history of Tourism.

Contemporary life is full of concerns that were referred by the participants. One of them relates to scheduling meetings at inappropriate times without taking into account the complexities of life.

The use of Sundays for various actions that are far from those dedicated to the family context or to the necessary rest, as well as the lack of sensitivity at the time of planning, also transcended.

Women’s retirement, the need to break traditional schemes in multiple aspects and adapt them to current times provoked interventions. And among the claims, was to promote greater benefits that help alleviate the daily rigors of those who comply, are exemplary in their work and contribute to their group.

Regla Dayamí Armenteros Mesa, delegate of the Mintur in the territory, made the conclusions of the event, and more than putting an end to it, she addressed the realities, and also the dreams, challenges and commitments of those who promote a Cuban industry that makes for life.
