Cuba exhibits tangible results about the development of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Development Strategy, an academic and interdisciplinary project, approved by the Cuban Software Industry and Informatization of Society Sector Program of the Ministry of Communications (Mincom), led by the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte y Loynaz (Ucial).
This was stated by Ph.D. Yailé Caballero Mota, researcher at the educational center, who specified that the strategy allows the participation of experts and students from the universities of Villa Clara, Santiago de Cuba and Havana. As well as, professionals from the Ministries of Superior Education (MES) and Mincom, and the high-tech company specialized in the development of computer applications.
The newspaper Juventud Rebelde points out that the also Full Member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences highlighted, among the relevant aspects of the project in the country, the creation of the International AI Research Institute at the University of Studies Hebei International Championships, of the People’s Republic of China, on October 16.
Their Cuban counterparts are represented there by “Marta Abreu” Central University of Las Villas, José Antonio Echeverría Technological University of Havana, the University of Havana, the University of Information Sciences, the Agrarian University of Havana, the University of Cienfuegos, the University of Oriente, the University of Ciego de Ávila, and the Ucial, which leads and guides it.
Caballero Mota, director of the International Institute in Hebei, explained that the center is made up of the AI, Big Data, Internet of Things, Blockchain, Cloud Computing and Software Development laboratories, and focuses in the scientific study and development of applications in the areas of biotechnology and biomedicine, environment, quality of life for the elderly, smart cities, precision agriculture and smart manufacturing (industry 4.0).
She added that the Asian academic enclave, destined for research, development, innovation, and doctoral, master’s and undergraduate training, not only links with its national companies, to apply its results in Cuba.
It also has a Data Center for high-performance computing and Big Data, “with the aim of providing services to the research of the International AI Research Institute and associated companies,” she noted.
Furthermore, he stressed that the development of applications through AI in the nation solves complex situations in multiple areas of knowledge, and among the specific results obtained in his territory, he states that “they are validated in the efficient use of energy, through the implementation of a system for the multi-objective balance of primary distribution circuits and the electrical demand for the National Electroenergy System is predicted.”
She added that through the use of AI, COVID-19, acute respiratory diseases and ataxia are detected early, from the identification of preclinical biomarkers and progression of gait and posture in neurodegenerative diseases, as well as its classification algorithms predict mediastinitis and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease.
In the area of constructions, the resistance capacity of composite structures is predicted. In Computational Mathematics, we work on the impact of evolutionary distribution estimation algorithms and in urban transportation, for route optimization, added Caballero Mota.
She, also, announced that the University of Camagüey and its scientific publishing house are working on the creation of a text that includes the applications developed, for more than 20 years, using AI, which will allow this knowledge to be safeguarded for future generations of professionals.
