As part of the country’s strategy to reduce the burden on the National Electric System (SEN) by increasing the use of renewable energy sources, Villa Clara is promoting the installation of photovoltaic systems in state and private sector entities, in addition to promoting a change in the energy matrix for residential customers.

To date, 24 state-sector entities have been identified where 1,706 kilowatts of photovoltaic energy have been installed. These include the Agustín Rodríguez Mena Central Rum Factory in Santo Domingo; the Buen Viaje agricultural market; the Dairy Products Company; the Integral Automation Unit (CEDAI); and the Copextel Villa Clara subsidiary, all in Santa Clara.

This was reported by Armando Hernández Pedroso, director of the National Office for the Rational Use of Energy (ONURE) in the province.

Similarly, 28 non-state entities have opted to use renewable energy sources and have already installed 425 kilowatts; while in the residential sector, 29 clients have installed 145 kilowatts, totaling 2,276 kilowatts of photovoltaic energy, acknowledged the Director of ONURE in Villa Clara.

Alfredo Leyva Céspedes, head of the Energy Efficiency Assessment Department at ONURE in the province, specified that, according to estimates from the agency he heads and the energy council, the province should reach 3,000 kilowatts by the end of the summer, and by the end of the year, based on the planned project portfolio, reach 5,000 kilowatts of photovoltaic energy.

The success of the national policy to promote the use of renewable energy sources has been due to the incentives approved to encourage their use. Among its benefits is the exemption from paying the profit tax during the investment recovery period, for a period of up to eight years, for the state sector and non-state management entities that execute projects of this type, the official explained.

Likewise, the control over energy consumption by non-state management systems has had an impact. As is known, these systems must guarantee at least 50% of the energy consumed through the use of renewable energy sources (FRP) over the next three years. Hence, the Provincial Energy Council has assigned a consumption plan, as economic actors, just as the state sector has.

The government, in conjunction with the National Energy Agency (UNURE), has also mediated the prior evaluation of the approvals of new economic actors based on the energy demand they will use and their commitment to installing FRP, Alfredo Leyva stated.

He also mentioned the integration achieved among all the organizations involved in implementing the energy transition in the region. (Freddy Pérez Cabrera)
