According to specialists from the Climate Watch Center (CVC), the current hurricane season showed its very active behavior due to the fact that only until last October, 19 tropical storms were accumulated.
Seven of them acquired the category of hurricanes, Elsa, Grace, Henri, Ida, Larry, Nicholas and Sam, and four that of high intensity hurricanes, Grace, Ida, Larry and Sam, but also two subtropical storms and, one of them went to be totally tropical at the beginning of November. They were finally 20 up today.
In their most recent evaluation, they also pointed out that in the geographical area of the tropical Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, in particular in the case of Cuba, their performance has been intense.
They attributed the phenomenon to the fact that their historical average, until the end of October, was 11 or 12 tropical storms, of which five or six became hurricanes, added the experts from the Institute of Meteorology: Hurricane Ida and tropical storms Fred and Elsa directly impacted the country, the latter becoming a hurricane after crossing it.
However, it was only in the Atlantic Ocean that the subtropical storm Wanda formed in the tenth month of the year, although it evolved in early November to become tropical.
In addition, Hurricanes Sam and Tropical Storm Victor, which emerged last September, continued their existence until they dissipated in the first days of October.
The Institute of Meteorology is one of the few in the Latin American region that makes its forecasts starting in the 1960s and based on the accumulated experience, its staff estimates that October is the most dangerous month of the cyclonic season for Cuba.
The convergence in this sense has always been based on the historical events and impacts that occurred in that period, which runs from June 1 to November 30 in the geographic area of the tropical Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico and The Caribbean Sea.
