The Villa Clara Seed Company, one of the most important in the country, expands its services and today focuses on the production of high-quality seeds, to increase the yields of these productions, so necessary for the food sovereignty program.
Allán Ramírez Diéguez, its director, points out that the entity’s mission is to produce biotechnological seeds, grains, oilseeds and vegetables, “various types of seeds destined for farmers, state companies, various crops, agricultural companies among others customers”.
He said that this work is essential with the lack of fertilizers and inputs, because “when a quality seed is planted, a 50% yield is achieved compared to others.”
Undoubtedly, the great novelty of the company is to produce a potato in vitro, with national seed, which would allow expanding tuber production and reducing imports. Today the workers of the entity extend their services to the whole country. In this sense, Ramírez Diéguez pointed out: “We produce and sell to Cuba, to all sectors of agriculture, the company is profitable, the workers are linked to the final results, we produce more than 40 varieties of seed types, today by the diversification and to improve the wages of workers”.
He said, on the other hand, that everything can be multiplied by biotechnology, “we are working with plantains, cassava, yams, fruits, plantains in all their varieties, malanga, also ornamental plants, pineapples, strawberries,” he said.
To achieve these results, the Villa Clara Seed Company has important links with scientific centers in the country, such as the Institute of Plant Biotechnology, the Institute for Tropical Viands Research, with the Central University, the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, the National Institute of Sugarcane Research, among others.
