REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, is the call of each May 17 during the World Recycling Day, with the aim that people treat waste properly and thus protect the environment.
Using as few plastic bags as possible, giving a new function to what is supposedly no longer useful and reusing certain materials in the production of the same or other objects, are the keys, for example, to save the life of 17 trees just by recycling thousand kilograms of paper.
Assuming this attitude of recycling and promoting the activity allows reducing the volume of waste and, therefore, its harmful effects. It also makes it possible to preserve natural resources; save energy; reduce pollution of water, soil, air, and the costs associated with the production of new goods.
Along with the aforementioned benefits, many more could be added, such as slowing the rise in the planet’s temperature and conserving ecosystems.
World Recycling Day invites us to remember the urgency of a circular economy based on this procedure and its importance for the care of the Earth.
Therefore, when we see in a product the design of recycling (a symbol composed of three arrows where each one represents the steps of the recycling process and the circular economy itself) we do not hesitate to take advantage of it again.
That symbol was created by Gary Anderson, a student at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and was the winner of a contest organized in the United States as part of activities related to Earth Day.
