ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON THE IMMOVABLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE CITY OF CAIBARIÉN

Author: M.Sc. Felix A. Correa Alvarez

Summary

Cultural heritage constitutes an attraction that must be protected against the new risks derived from climate change, but it is also a resource that can strengthen the adaptive capacity of human communities in the face of this phenomenon. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the effects of climate change on the immovable cultural heritage of the city of Caibarién. Research methods are used, among which the empirical, the statistical-mathematical, the field work and the cartographic methods based on the use of GIS stand out. It is defined that 10.9% of real estate will be partially affected by flooding by 2050 and 37.5% by 2100, due to rise in average sea level. The characteristics of the threatened properties are evaluated taking into account the type of construction, period, style, levels and degree of conservation, and the potential tourist attraction that the city loses as a consequence of this phenomenon is numerically defined. The resistance of these buildings to the physical, chemical and mechanical erosion processes caused by the increase in temperature, added to the effects of atmospheric pollution, is also determined. Finally, actions are proposed for the preservation of immovable cultural heritage assets in the face of the effects of climate change.
