The behavior of non-communicable diseases (ENT) requires modifications of incorrect habits in lifestyles in view of the upward trends experienced in Villa Clara.
This was corroborated during the session of the Provincial Health Council, according to the analysis presented by Dr. Barbarita Rodríguez González, in charge of the NCD Program in the branch’s provincial department.
These conditions cause more than 70% of deaths in the world, while every 2 seconds someone dies prematurely from one of them. The reality shows that in Cuba 197 people die every day from the consequences of smoking, alcohol, an unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity.
If regulated, close to 216,000 lives could be saved in the country by the year 2025, which are influenced by cardiovascular and chronic diseases of the lower respiratory tract, malignant tumors, diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension, among others.
To achieve the objective, intersectorality will be very necessary, as defined by Dr. Neil Reyes Miranda, director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology (CPHEM), so it will be necessary to insist on prevention and eliminate the factors that reduce the life chances.
According to the study presented, the prevalence of NCDs in the last five years increases hypertension, diabetes mellitus, asthma and chronic kidney disease.
By municipalities, 28% of the population over 15 years of age is classified as hypertensive, 2.4% has chronic kidney disease, 7.2% has diabetes mellitus, while 10.3% suffers from bronchial asthma.
Diagnostic possibilities are not always used in time to determine an illness early. PSA is available, a tumor marker or prostate antigen that allows early detection of alterations in this organ among men over 50 years of age, or in those who have a family history of prostate cancer and are over 45 years of age.
On the other hand, a simple urine test, such as microalbuminuria, makes it possible to detect not only kidney damage, but also affectations in the vascular system early, given that more than 50% of patients undergoing hemodialysis have diabetes or HTA as a cause of his chronic kidney disease.
Regarding the habit of smoking, the Resolution of the Minister of Health, which even prohibits smoking in the institutions of the branch, is not always complied with.
It also transpired that 11% of household admissions were due to a NCD, while 22% of those seen in an emergency were due to one of the main causes: ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and hypertension. Five patients a day come to these services for one of these reasons, and an estimated 17 people die every day from an NCD, to which is added the death of six people between the ages of 30 and 69.
Marta Cárdenas Yanes, on behalf of the Provincial Directorate of Education, insisted on comprehensive care for students and workers with health assessment and emphasis on school in a comprehensive manner.
In the session, the Ministry of Higher Education, the MININT medical services, as well as the municipalities of Remedios and Quemado de Güines, reported. There was also an update on the Operational Group for the Confrontation and Fight against AIDS (GOPELS), by Otmara Rodríguez Bartumeu, provincial official and person in charge of the activity.
Dr. Leydis García Rivero, specialist in the educational component of the NCD Program, informed that Villa Clara will host the national actions for the World Day of Arterial Hypertension established every May 17.
