The care of pregnant women and the elderly was an essential point of the vice-governor of Villa Clara’s tour of the health centers in Camajuaní and Remedios municipalities.
In Villa Clara, actions are outlined to improve the quality of life of older adults, pregnant women or patients with various pathologies; a priority to guarantee the well-being of certain people or groups, and which constitutes a task for both medical personnel and government authorities.
This was evident during the checkup of the Health programs and centers carried out by the vice governor of the province, Noel Chinea Pérez, in the municipalities of Camajuaní and Remedios.
Maternal and Child Care Program: Challenge and priority
The first site visited was the Matilde Prado maternal home, in Camajuaní. In a welcoming and comfortable environment, Chinea Pérez exchanged with pregnant women and workers. Also present were Yudith González Chávez, vice mayor of the Board of Directors in Camajuenense territory, and Yandry Alfonso Chang, director of the Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI) in Villa Clara.
Alfonso Chang referred to the food products available to the Home’s pregnant women, as well as the need to acquire gas to cook food in the complex energy situation that the province is going through.
For their part, the surrogates expressed their opinions about the amenities of the site and the attention of the staff who work there. Waiting for her third child, Arianna Mora Suárez, 22, comments that she feels comfortable in the center that will welcome her until the baby reaches the appropriate weight.
At another point in the visit, the vice governor insisted on better functioning of the PAMI municipal intersectoral commission. Likewise, it covered concerns that not only concern the Health sector, but also the Government and all the factors brought together by said commission.
In 2024, the municipality of Camajuaní closed the year with an infant mortality rate of 6.0. In that sense, the demand to achieve a lower rate was emphasized. The main pathologies have been produced by genetic causes, and the possibility of carrying out studies in this regard was raised. It was also specified that the medical team adopts strategies in its structure and goes to polyclinics and medical offices in order to detect problems, but, above all, help solve them.
Currently, the Matilde Prado maternity home has six pregnant women admitted, and it has a capacity of ten beds. Therefore, at the end of the meeting, emphasis was placed on the detection of pregnant women who require this care to transfer them to the center, and, in addition, on the effective functioning of the commission that oversees this vital program.
In Remedios, the Maternal Home was also an essential stop on the tour. There, Noel Chinea spoke with the two young women who remain in care. For Laís Pérez Manso Espinosa, 29 years old, and in her second pregnancy, she praised the care she receives, like her partner, who suffered a hypertensive emergency and follows medical instructions from the serenity of the center.
Once again, the vice governor of the province addressed the issue of the intersectoral commission which, in this case, can contribute to the nutritional reinforcement of patients. Likewise, he mentioned the number of productive structures in Remedios and pointed out the potential of the municipality in terms of various crops. He assured that, for this reason, the PAMI commission in the municipality must ensure that all organizations participate and, in this way, influence pregnant women to feel better at Home.
Leidy Saray Rodríguez Hernández, director of Medical Care and Medicines of the General Directorate of Health, pointed out that the Remediano Home has very favorable structural conditions. It is a cool and spacious place, with 15 beds available to the municipality’s pregnant women, but the occupational index is low, and increasing it today represents one of the fundamental challenges of PAMI throughout the country.
«Working intersectorally is important.”She has to leave the office, the doctor, the CDR, the federations, everyone who works so that that pregnant woman who is away gets here.” Achieving this, he noted, corresponds to intersectoral work, and he stressed that actions must continue to be carried out so that, once in the Home, he receives quality care.
Finally, there was a discussion with administration personnel about the supply of food—including proteins—as well as the challenges that still prevail in terms of household appliances and the acquisition of gas.
Remedios analyzes its Health indicators
At the end of the tour, the vice-governor and Provincial Health directors met in Remedios where, together with the local medical staff, they made the conclusions. In general, the situation of the municipality was evaluated through the interventions of each area of the sector.
Among the most debated topics, the staff in primary care and its difficulties in some health centers stood out, as well as the urgency of opening a geriatrics room in the Remediano hospital, as part of the Senior Citizens Program. In addition, reference was made to the construction works of the main nursing home in Remedios and the improvement of its conditions.
Reducing the rate of cesarean sections, increasing the occupational rate of pregnant women and avoiding late recruitment of pregnancies were among the purposes of the PAMI in the territory. On the other hand, offering maintenance to the Rehabilitation room, assigning a suitable location for the Mental Health center and increasing the number of people vaccinated against leptospira in 2025, were also included among the goals and concerns.
Noel Chinea Pérez expressed that human resources are a priority in the sector, and emphasized the payment of maximum effort, which protects and recognizes workers. Likewise, he referred to the cadre policy, and insisted on the differentiated attention that the latter requires in the municipality of Remedios.
