Preventing the fire from continuing to spread in the mountainous area of the municipality of Mayarí, in eastern Cuba, is today a priority for the forces fighting the fire that began on January 26.
Professional teams from the Ranger Corps and the Mayarí Agroforestry Company together with volunteers and the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) are working to contain and minimize the effects of the incident, which originated in the town of El Prado, located some 700 meters above the sea level.
Major Elio Ramírez, Civil Defense specialist of that territory of the Turquino Plan, explained that one of the main actions has been the execution of more than 40 kilometers of trail, with a dimension of four to six meters wide.
However, the characteristics of the place, located in a rugged geography, difficult to access; with abundant organic plant material and low rainfall have made the work of the different organizations involved in containing the flames more complex.
Among the factors with the greatest incidence have been the drought and the presence of pinus cubensis, which disperses to multiple places when its cones explode, which favors new outbreaks at a rapid speed.
As confirmed by Ramírez, more than a thousand hectares are already affected, some 600 of them correspond to natural forest, while the rest are plantations, cleared areas, roads and non-forested surfaces.
The specialist added that drones, specialized machinery, and FAR helicopters work in the area, and that the necessary resources and assurances are also available to continue the actions.
Cuba has a National Forest Fire Protection System, which has a strategy and a National Fire Management and Management Program in forests for the period 2018-2025.
