Companies such as Segurmática, Movitel, Desoft, and Cubatel, members of the Information Technology and Communications Business Group, continue their uninterrupted work to contribute to the country’s digital transformation. In the previous installment of this section, we reviewed some of the entities that make up the Information Technology and Communications Business Group (GEIC), vital to the Cuban technological landscape.

Today we conclude this overview of the work carried out over the past year and the products already offered, this time with companies such as Segurmática, Movitel, Desoft, and Cubatel, who recently held a press conference.

SEGURMÁTICA MOBILE SECURITY

Yolanda Varela Páez, senior antivirus engine specialist at Segurmática, presented to the press a product that offers various security features for mobile devices developed by the company.

Among the main features of Segurmática Mobile Security, in addition to malware protection, is a detailed list of permissions required by apps, allowing users to make informed decisions about their suitability. The product also includes a system that groups suspicious permissions, Cuba-specific call blocking, parental controls, and a firewall. The firewall allows filtering of internet access for apps. The parental control feature allows parents to restrict access to certain apps.

Call blocking is configured for fraudulent international numbers, identified as a cause of unexplained balance losses among Cuban customers. Varela Páez emphasized that Segurmática offers frequent updates and technical support. The company is also an authorized digital certification service provider, which includes issuing digital signatures for the certification of electronic documents, according to Juan Miguel Alonso Torres, Segurmática’s development director.

CYBERSECURITY SUPERVISION AND MONITORING

Movitel, a telecommunications company with 28 years of experience, showcased at the event an internal cybersecurity supervision and monitoring system that adapts to the needs and limited resources of small and medium-sized businesses.

Julio Alpízar Aguiar, Movitel’s director of network development and management, explained that the system is based on open source software and is capable of operating on servers with limited resources. The application has two main functions: to collect activity from all applications and to alert on potential attacks.

The system is installed on the perimeter of clients’ networks to mitigate attacks on websites, email servers, and corporate clouds. While the software stops some attacks, analysis by specialists is crucial.

The system offers real-time analysis, integration with multiple systems, rapid deployment, and reduced maintenance. This development is primarily intended for small and medium-sized networks.

Movitel offers ongoing technical support and updates for this product, Alpízar Aguiar commented.

DESOFT DRIVES DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

With more than 27 years of experience in the technology sector, the IT Applications Company Desoft has established itself as one of the leaders in the development of digital solutions in Cuba. Founded on February 9, 1996, it is a key player in the country’s digital transformation, with more than a thousand employees, 64 percent of whom are young and 55 percent women. Its growth lies not only in its ability to adapt to local needs but also in its expansion into international markets.

Osmara Nariño Gonlbourn, Director of Commercial Services at Desoft, explained that in response to the economic and social transformations that have marked Cuba in recent years, they have redefined their business strategy to be more competitive both within and outside the country.

With the goal of bringing its solutions closer to the specific needs of local territories, universities, research centers, and projects, the company has structured its operations into eight state-owned MSMEs and an equal number of core business units distributed throughout the country. Furthermore, Desoft has adopted Odoo software, recognized worldwide for its robustness and flexibility, as the technological foundation for its products and services, commented Nariño Gonlbourn.

This digital ecosystem allows consumers and suppliers to establish synergies that boost efficiency in business and government management, offering greater guarantees, flexibility, and accessible support for all clients. Furthermore, Desoft’s Director of Commercial Services explained that its current offering covers various strategic areas that respond to the main international trends in technology and management. Its main lines of services include business and government management, with solutions aligned with global Industry 4.0 trends.

Its portfolio includes tools such as the ZOOM ERP (Cuban localization of Odoo), Energux, DM+, CGM, and Sagas, among others. These systems optimize business and government processes, facilitating data-driven decision-making. For e-government, the company develops and implements integrated platforms that guarantee the interoperability, sustainability, and security of digital solutions.

Among its most significant achievements is the technological support for more than 160 provincial and municipal government portals. Additionally, it has created solutions such as the Delegate Management Module and the Population Service Module, which improve interaction between citizens and public institutions.

Desoft leads innovative initiatives in the digital sphere, such as the Fevexpo platform, the first in Cuba designed for virtual and hybrid events. It also offers value-added services for mobile telephony (entuMóvil brand), website development, virtual stores, and mobile applications for Android. Aware of the importance of ongoing training, Nariño Gonlbourn said, Desoft has a branch training center for IT that offers a virtual learning ecosystem.

This system enables distance learning in areas such as application development, business management, operating systems, and English. The center has been recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education as Category A, standing out for its highly qualified teaching team. In collaboration with other national companies, Desoft distributes essential products such as Segurmática Antivirus, Versat Sarasola, and Digital Signature.

These partnerships reinforce its commitment to IT security and the modernization of digital processes in the country. Desoft’s international reach is reflected in its wide range of exportable solutions, which include the aforementioned products, among others.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION

The Cuban Telecommunications Company, Cubatel S.A., represented by Hyancith Caridad Aballí Oña, head of the Institutional Development Group, is a 100% nationally owned corporation specializing in the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure.

It provides design, engineering, and project services, construction of technological civil infrastructure, and installation of fiber optic and copper networks. It also provides technical assistance, infrastructure maintenance, and operation, developing projects such as the expansion and management of fiber optic networks. Its strategic projects include the installation of 4G base stations and the technological upgrade of copper networks for fixed telephony.

Aballí Oña highlighted that a significant project for 2023 was the construction of the technological civil works for the docking of the Arimao submarine fiber optic cable in Cienfuegos. Another project it is working on is fiber-to-the-home, in collaboration with Etecsa (National Telecommunications Institute) for its implementation in residential areas.

The GEIC and its member companies demonstrate a firm commitment and constant work in advancing the digital transformation in Cuba. Through clear strategic objectives, innovative projects, and the dedication of its professionals, it has established itself as a key player in the growth of the national economy.
