Havana, Feb 20 (ACN) The Marine Science Research Institute (ICIMAR) expanded its scope with the presence of high-level professionals in national and international organizations.
A group of them are part of the National Tribunal for the granting of Scientific Degrees in Biological Sciences and Pharmaceuticals. Ivones Hernández Balmaseda, Assistant Researcher of its Department of Pharmacology, has informed to the Cuban News Agency.
He added that three are members of the Governing Board of the Cuban Society of Pharmacology and one is the National Coordinator of the Latin American Biology Network. Another is the General Coordinator of that group and one more represents Cuba in the Caribbean SOS Network of the Ibero-American Program of Science and Technology for Development (CYTED).
The latter arose in 1984 through an Inter-institutional Framework Agreement signed by the member countries of the Ibero-American Community of Nations, included in the Cooperation Programs dependent on the meetings of Ibero-American Heads of State and Government at their V Summit, held in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, in October 1995.
Hernández Balmaseda also said that 39 young people who work at ICIMAR are incorporated into the lines of research and services, whose work groups have allowed the increase of their benefits and have joined threatened specialties due to the aging of professionals.
The Institute of Marine Sciences was created on February 17, 2017 from the merger of the Center for Marine Bioproducts (CEBIMAR) and the Institute of Oceanology (IdO), both with long experience in the development of scientific research in the field of marine sciences.
Its essential objective is aimed at increasing the scientific bases for the knowledge, management, conservation, sustainable use and rehabilitation of natural resources and processes in the marine and coastal zone. In addition, to the commercialization of oceanographic, biological services and products and of biomedical and industrial applications for the solution of environmental, social and economic problems.
It is one of the institutions of Environment Agency, of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA). The other two are those of Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies, and Social and Humanistic Sciences.
Its products are in correspondence with state priorities, among them, national defense, tourism, oil development, confrontation with climate change, as well as conservation and rational use of natural resources.
